How to plan a Sydney to Melbourne road trip

Sometimes to really get to know a place you have to take to the roads and see it for yourself. You may start in Sydney and head to the Blue Mountains or Jervis Bay, but it’s the moments in between that really make a trip special; it’s stopping on the side of the road to spot a kangaroo and its joeys or stopping by at a small seaside town and sharing a special interaction with a local. You’ll always see incredible sights in New South Wales, but those unique moments you experience are what make road trips truly memorable.

And for the road trip of a lifetime we have an incredible Sydney to Melbourne 12 day itinerary for you:

Spot a Kangaroo as you drive!

Days 1 - 3 | Sydney

Start off by exploring this wonderful city, why not visit the famous Sydney Opera House, take a ferry to discover the beautiful beaches nearby or thrill seekers can take in the views on a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. You will spend three nights at The PARKROYAL Darling Harbour which is conveniently located a short walk from the harbour and close to many restaurants, bars and shopping outlets.

Days 4-5 | Jervis Bay

Collect your motorhome today and head out of the city. Stop en route at the Kiama Blowhole, about two hours into your journey. Pull into Seven Mile beach to experience the pristine white sand and crystal clear Pacific Ocean. From here, follow the Grand Pacific Drive alongside the Shoalhaven River. Take a stroll around Berry, taking in the lovely antique shops and cafes, before taking a turn off to Jervis Bay, known for having the whitest sand in the world, which sits nicely against its perfect turquoise waters. Located within Booderee National Park, the bay has lots of charming villages scattered along it. The following day is at your leisure to enjoy this pristine paradise, why not join a dolphin and whale-watching cruise or there are also kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing and fishing tours available.

Drive south to Batemans Bay, soaking in the coastal views along the journey. Don't forget to check out their famous Clyde River Oysters. It'll take you less than an hour down the Princes Highway to reach Narooma, home of Australia Rock and the Glasshouse Rocks. Located at the beach, these ancient rock formations were formed by tectonic plate movement and it is worth a trip down to the south end of the beach where these are located to snap a photo. Surrounded by ocean, lakes and rivers, Narooma is a rhapsody in blue. It’s a place to dive deep with seals, paddle along glassy bays and pluck oysters from the shallows. And while it’s long been famous for its captivating natural wonders, this coastal community is fast becoming the South Coast’s most fashionable foodie destination.
